Xeomin

A popular alternative to other popular treatments like Botox and Dysport, Xeomin is an injectable neuromodulator designed to help patients reduce the appearance of unwanted wrinkles, most specifically dynamic wrinkles which are essentially caused by the muscles beneath the skin which contract when we make expressions. While Botox is certainly the most popular aesthetic enhancement treatment around today, and easily the best method for treating dynamic face wrinkles, a few of its alternatives Dysport and Xeomin are slowly gaining popularity as the years go by.

What is Xeomin?

Xeomin works similarly to Botox and Dysport, as it is an injectable neuromodulator treatment used in the reduction of unwanted wrinkles and expression lines. While it works quite similarly, and utilizes the same active ingredient, the botulinum toxin-A, there are a few slight variances that set Xeomin apart as a Botox alternative.
How Does Xeomin Work?
Amongst many patients, Xeomin is often referred to as “the naked injectable”. The reason for this nickname is because Xeomin, unlike Botox and Dysport, does not contain any other additives or compounds, and it is purely made from the active ingredient, the botulinum toxin-A. This allows Xeomin to be more effective in certain patients, as their body chemistry simply lends itself to the use of Xeomin rather than Botox.

As it does with Botox, the botulinum toxin-A is derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, the same bacteria that causes the paralysis condition known as botulism. While this might be scary to some, such applications of paralyzing compounds are actually quite common in medicine and specifically in aesthetics, as it isn’t the actual illness, but rather a muted form of it used for a specific purpose. Once the compound is injected into the skin, it will prevent the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine from within the endings of our muscles – causing temporary paralysis. By doing so, it prevents the brain impulses for facial expressions from reaching the facial muscles, and prevents any future contractions of these muscles. It’s important to understand that facial expressions, such as when we smile or frown, are known to cause dynamic wrinkles over time. And these expressions are performed by the contractions of the facial muscles that lead to the movement of our facial features and thus give us expressions. By temporarily paralyzing these muscles, and preventing them from contracting, this allows the skin to smooth itself out, and decreases the appearance of these expression lines or wrinkles.

Benefits of Xeomin

The fact is that because Xeomin is a close alternative to Botox, and even Dysport, it works using a similar mechanism of action, and therefore offers many of the same benefits as the other two. In some instances, patients who might have used Botox or Dysport for long periods of time, may no longer find it to offer them the same effects they had previously attained early on. At such a point, they may want to try Xeomin as it might work more effectively at this point. In addition, certain individuals simply have different body chemistry that might simply fit better with Xeomin.

As we mentioned before, being known as “the naked injectable”, Xeomin does not contain any additives, and in many patients this level of added purity provides a number of benefits. The fact is that the lack of additives and binding agents can mean that the body is less likely to resist its effects, and in some patients, this can mean faster, more effective results. In addition, for some patients the binding agents and additives can cause irritations and discomfort they may not get with Xeomin because it is purely the botulinum toxin. Some of the other general benefits of Xeomin include:

  • Reduced forehead wrinkles
  • Reduced eyebrow wrinkles
  • Little to no downtime
  • Generally repeated every 4-6 months.
  • Little to no pain.
  • Sessions only require about 5-10 minutes, depending on size of the treatment area.

Xeomin Treatment

Xeomin is generally administered in slightly smaller doses, and sessions are relatively quick, with some completed in less than 15 minutes. And often this can mean results may start to be visible almost immediately, and will steadily improve over the next few days. As with Botox, treatment is relatively safe, and there are minimal side effects or risks, as long as you have an experienced injector performing the procedure. Like with any injectable however, there might be some minor swelling, redness, and discomfort along the injection site – however, this should dissipate within a day or so.
At Lolien, we offer a variety of injectable treatments in addition to Xeomin, such as Botox, Dermal Fillers, and more! For more information on Xeomin or any of our other injectable treatments, be sure to contact Lolien MD today!
